When my fiance first told me we could make our own wedding rings. I had no idea it was even possible.
“You want me to make your own wedding ring? Are you sure you really trust me to do that?” These were just some of the thoughts crossing my mind about the idea of making my future wife’s wedding ring, the ring she would wear for the rest of her life!
However, after doing our research and shopping for our wedding rings, we just really wasn’t happy with the experience that jewellery shops were offering us. We knew we wanted to make this a special moment. So I am so pleased we decided to do our research and make our own wedding rings, and I want to share with you why you should make your own wedding rings too.
Our adventure begins here...
Let me introduce you to The Quarter Workshop, the workshop of love and dreams.
Hidden away in a gorgeous courtyard, in the Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham, lies a beautiful workshop called The Quarter Workshop.
On arrival, we were greeted by the kind and friendly Roxy who was going to be our tutor for the day and our magical guide for making our rings.
When we first walked up the stairs and entered the workshop, we stood in amazement! Here stood this magical workshop with tools, vices and interesting devices that each had shared so many special memories of creating each other’s own wedding rings. We instantly knew that this was going to be a really special experience.
But will I even be good enough?
I have to be honest, I was quite nervous and although I am a professional wedding magician and skilled in sleight of hand, I was really nervous that I didn't have the delicacy or intricacy to make my fiance's wedding ring. I mean, this was going to be the ring that my future wife was going to wear for the rest of her life, and I certainly didn't want to make a mistake. But this didn't phase Roxy, instead, Roxy reassured me every step of the way. She said, “ I will be fine and not to worry, you will both leave here with a perfect set of wedding rings.” She filled me with confidence and let me know that everything's going to be ok and we would both leave the workshop with something amazing.
I should say, that prior to signing up for the workshop, you get to choose what kind of rings you like. There are three bits of information that we had to submit.
Width - How wide we wanted our bands
Shape - What kind of shape we wanted our rings to be.
Metal Choice - What do we want our rings to be made of. There are many materials to choose from, such as gold, white gold, silver, platinum and more. I had chosen to buy my fiance a platinum engagement ring and it’s preferred that you match the same material as the engagement ring. So platinum is what we chose for our rings.
The whole experience was exclusive to us and it begins at a rustic wooden table that is beautifully crafted and decorated with fresh flowers. You could feel the magic and love of so many couples that had also shared their wonderful experience here. You start off with your chosen strips of metal that will later become your emblem of love. These strips of metal are roughly the same shape and width as the band you want to make.
Making the rings
During the experience, we both took part in many stages such as; hammering, shaping, soldering, filing & buffing the ring. You are even allowed to make bespoke & intricate designs to the rings, and for my fiance’s ring we wanted to create a special touch, so I added a unique twist to her ring to remind her of this amazing memory. Roxy guided us through the whole experience and as a true professional she reassured us at every step of the way. (Even when I made a few mistakes too!)
The whole experience was really fun and it lasts about 4 hours, and for us, the time just flew by. It was great to make a whole day out of it too, so we made sure we took up the opportunity to grab some delicious food and a spot of shopping in the Bullring centre.
But the reason why I wanted to share our experience is that it’s such an amazing, special and intimate moment that I and my fiance will never forget. Although I am a wedding supplier myself, I completely empathise with my many couples about the frustrations of postponing a wedding ( I am on my third now!!!!) and whilst we made these rings for our 2020 wedding. Unfortunately, our wedding couldn’t go ahead due to the winter lockdown. However, I am still pleased we did this wonderful workshop because, when our day finally arrives in 2022, I know that when we put our rings on, it will have a special meaning and we will carry that experience with us for the rest of our lives.
If anybody is looking to create a wonderful moment and share an amazing experience together during your wedding planning, then I highly recommend The Quarter Workshop. It’s fantastically priced, it’s value for money and it’s an incredible moment that you will never forget. From the initial communication to booking and taking part in the workshop. This is one of the best experiences that I've ever shared and I highly recommend this workshop to all couples.
